Department of Shalakya Tantra
(Ophthalmology, ENT, and Oro-Dental Sciences)
Introduction Shalakya Tantra is one of the eight specialized branches of Ayurveda (Ashtanga Ayurveda) that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases occurring above the clavicle (Urdhva-Jatru). This includes disorders of the Eyes (Netra), Ears (Karna), Nose (Nasa), Throat (Kantha), Head (Shira), and Oral Cavity (Mukha).
The name is derived from the word Shalaka (probe), reflecting the branch's historical focus on precision instruments and surgical/para-surgical interventions.
